I became a father for the first – and last – time as I encroached upon age 40. And I remember more than a few embarrassing moments; like the time I attended Andy’s 1st “Back to School Night” where I met his 1st grade teacher. All the other parents seemed be in a great rush to get home – probably to tuck their other children into bed – so I allowed them all to meet and greet the teacher before I did. I’m suspecting that is was by the process of elimination that Andy’s teacher figured out who I was. So as I approached her, and we simultaneously extended our hands to exchange greetings, she spoke first saying, “Hi, and you must be Andy’s grandfather”. I’m sure my grimace betrayed her faux pas, which caused her to immediately back-peddle – and fast. But the more she tried to rectify her errant presumption, the more she wrecked it. I drove home that evening with a whole new empathy for the Biblical couple, Abraham and Sarah. I’m quite sure they encountered more than a few like-awkward encounters.
Please come this Sunday to peer back into the lives of this near centenarian couple to discover why the Bible elevates both as marvels of faith.
