In the poem, “To a Mouse,” the peerless Scotch poet, Robert Burns, penned these familiar words: “The best laid schemes of mice and men.” And then in his classic Scots brogue, he spelled out the not-unsurprising outcome: “gang aft a-gley,” which translates into our English with, “can often go awry.”
We’ve all made plans, some small, some big, that somewhere along their path to fruition fell apart before they ever materialized. From age four into my junior year in college, I had planned to become a professional baseball player – me and thousands of other young wannabes. But the combination of my diminutive size, coupled with my less-than-stellar proficiency on the diamond caused my plan to gang a-gley.
