One of our church families hosts a Bible Study on the first and third Friday evenings every month. During our most recent study, one of our regulars spurred a lively discussion surrounding the subject of eternal security. Now what in the theological world is eternal security? It’s the doctrine that assures every believer that “once saved, always saved.” YET, throughout Church history, this subject has stirred fierce debate.
Why? Simply because some Bible passages aren’t as clear as we would wish them to be. Couple this interpretive conundrum with the questionable behavior of some professed Christians, it’s easy to see why many denominations have espoused the opposing view: that some Christians can so spiritually mess up that they can lose their salvation.
It often looks something like this: A person responds to the Gospel message and professes faith in Jesus; but then over time, the person evidences little-to-no spiritual growth. Or – a person does evidence some spiritual changes and even sustains them for a period of time; only later to fall off the spiritual table big time. Deduction: in both case scenarios, one’s salvation is lost.
Why not come out this Sunday as the Apostle Paul also contributed to this debate in a sermon I’ve entitled, “Jesus & Me – BFF’s”?
