In Genesis, Abraham is told by God to sacrifice Isaac. At the last moment God restrains the knife and sends a ram. Later God sends his own son to be sacrificed for our sins. Is 52.13 to Is 53.
The Hebrews of Jesus time were very eager for a triumphant messiah king who would throw out the Roman oppressors. They forgot about the suffering servant story in the Old Testament which also appears in Ps 2.
Today we so often see Jesus as a friend that we can overlook that died a terrible death to wipe out our sins.
