I was just a few years into my first pastorate and sitting peacefully at my desk when my phone rang. On the other end, Jill (not her real name) was screaming into the receiver, “Jack” (also not his real name) “is on his way home from work and is threatening to kill me.”
Jack had a protracted history of mental illness and I was fearing the worst, but praying for limited collateral damage. I flew to my car and slammed the pedal to the metal.
