Back during my high school days, I would get all spruced up to go out on a date. I would don my one pair of checkered bellbottom pants and splash on some Old Spice cologne. I was all set to bowl over some lucky girl. (Oh, how deluded I was!”) Anyhow, just before I would walk out the door, my mom would yell out after me the same parting words every single time: “Just remember, young man, Jesus is sitting right between you and your date.” Did you ever try to kiss a girl while seeing the Face of Jesus staring back at you? Talk about a mood killer. But it worked! – which is why a generation later I would tell Andy before he went out on a date, “Just remember, young man, Jesus …”
I strove to track for Jesus during those oft-difficult adolescent years. I faithfully attended Young Life on Monday evenings and dutifully carried my Bible to school on Wednesday mornings to attend a prayer meeting. But I was also a red-blooded, post-pubescent young man, battling the lusts of the flesh.
So what has changed in my life between then and now? My age, my hair color, my energy, my sleep patterns, my memory – but not my desire to sin. Thankfully, it has lessened, but it is still very much alive.
Why not tune in this Sunday morning at 10 to learn more about the internal war that every Christian wages as our sinful human nature keeps battling to regain the throne of our hearts?
