Several years ago, I lovingly confronted one of my closest Christian brothers when I suspected he was having an affair. His response was typical of most of us when we’re being faced with admitting to some upsetting sin. He denied any guilt; and not just once, but several times – until his adult son walked in on him at a most compromising moment.
After all the fallout, including a broken marriage, I went to see him and asked why he didn’t let me help before the situation got out of hand. I’ll never forget his excuse – which I believe he truly believed! He looked me square in the eyes and said: “Well you” – so now it was about to become my fault – “you always taught me that God’ll forgive any sin I commit. So I knew God’d forgive me; all I needed to do was ask for His forgiveness.”
Wow! To what great lengths of Biblical distortion our sin will drag us. If you would like to know what the Bible does teach along this line, please join us this Sunday morning as I preach a sermon entitled, “License to Sin.”
