An unnamed pastor had been preaching a sermon series on the importance of daily Bible reading. In the midst of this series, a couple from his church invited him and his wife over for an evening of dinner and fellowship. Shortly after their arrival, the wives slipped off to the kitchen to chat and put the final touches on the meal.
Now the pastor’s wife wasn’t being at all nosy when she did what most of us do in similar circumstances – she looked around the room out of curiosity. Her eyes lit upon the family calendar. There scripted on this date was this telling scribble: “Pastor coming for dinner: dust the Bibles.”
Now just so you know, if you invite Mari and me over for dinner, we wear white gloves.
I’m quite sure we all know what a hypocrite is – it’s what other Christians are! Not exactly – but it’s close to what the familiar adage says it is: not practicing what we profess – like this couple who prominently displayed their Bibles, but just didn’t read them.
Why not come out this Sunday to learn more about that subject that we see everywhere else – except in the mirror? Sermon title: “You Hypocrite!”
