Though our beloved country doesn’t host a coronation, as we’re not a monarchy, we nonetheless conduct a whole lot of Pomp and Circumstance around our Presidential Inaugurations. Back on Jan. 20th, the official ceremony kicked off at 8:30am with the then President-Elect Donald Trump and his wife, Melania, attending church service at St. John’s Church in DC. From there they visited the White House where President Obama and his wife hosted a Coffee and Tea Reception for them. At 11:16am, Sen. Roy Blunt delivered the Opening Remarks. Then in rapid-fire succession, a series of patriot guests offered their words of congrats and challenge. The morning climaxed at 11:47 when Chief Justice John Roberts administered the Presidential Oath and Donald Trump became our 45th President.
The now-President Trump then performed his first official duty, he gave his Inaugural Address. But the day was far from over. There was a Signing Ceremony, a luncheon, the Review of Troops, a parade to his new house, and lastly, a long evening with a succession of Inaugural Balls.
All this hoopla barely reminds me of another Inauguration Day almost 2000 yrs. ago, what is familiarly called the “Triumphal Procession”; which as it turned out, was anything but triumphal. Some think our new President has done some rather unconventional things since taking office, but at least for his first act, he didn’t storm the U.S. Treasury to overturn the computer tables while brandishing his I-Phone as a whip.
Please come this Sunday to hear more about Jesus’ parade and how it’s still being marched today.
