Sermon Synopsis for 6/12: “No Carved Images”

All of us ought to feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude to Indiana Jones for finding it and Paramount Pictures for reporting it. It’s just so sad that governmental bureaucracy and inefficiency lost it all over again; this time not in the sands of Egypt, but inside some obscure marble warehouse in D.C. Of course, I’m referring to the ancient Israeli’s Ark of the Covenant, that earthly symbol of God’s Presence on earth.

But maybe it’s not so sad after all. Why do I say this? Because I fear we’d end up doing with it, what we so carelessly do with so many other religious relics. We elevate such, that the symbol of worship usurps the object of worship. In this case, the Ark would dethrone God.

Why not plan on spending this Sunday morning with us as we learn what the 2nd Great Commandment says to us today, that we should make “No Carved Images”?
