I submit to you that Ebenezer Scrooge should’ve lived in this century. Why would I make such an anachronistic claim? Because the 2-word epithet for which he’s become infamous certainly fits better into our philosophical day: “Bah! Humbug!” Do you know what “bah” means? It means to “express contempt or disgust”. And “humbug?” It means to “deceive” or can refer to something as “nonsense.”<\/p>\n
Our contemporary culture has treated the true origin and meaning of Christmas with “Bah!”, with contempt. We’re corrected if we say, “Merry Christmas”, and schooled to wish instead, “Happy Holidays.” And to posit that God visited our planet to save sinners? We’re not sinners; we’re innately good! Only narrow-minded, Bible-thumping non-intellectuals believe that “nonsense!”<\/p>\n
I beg to agree! So am I narrow-minded? Guilty. My mind is as narrow as the Bible. What it reveals, I believe. Am I Bible-thumper? Guilty again; if by this is meant that the Bible serves as my final authority in all matters pertaining to life’s most essential questions; questions like, “Who am I?” “Why am I here?” and “Where am I ultimately going?” Then yes: I am a Big Time Pulpit-Pounding Bible-Thumper. And am I a non-intellectual? When you take into account the unfathomable depth of knowledge about Deity that mankind has yet to plumb, then we’re all non-intellectuals! And we’re not alone; we’re in the company of such other non-intellectuals as Isaac Newton, Leonardo Da Vinci, Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking.<\/p>\n
Beginning this Sunday and continuing through the month of December, we will probe deeper into the Bible’s revelation concerning the central Person for Whom the Holyday received both its name and true significance.
