Catastrophic choice. For on Sept. 7<sup>th<\/sup>, 1900, despite the strong warning of the federal government, the\u00a0residents of Galveston, TX,\u00a0went to\u00a0bed like every other\u00a0night expecting a\u00a0restful repose.\u00a0But while the people slept, a\u00a0hurricane awoke &#8211; and with a\u00a0nightmarish ferocity. A Category 4 with estimated winds topping out at 145 mph\u00a0slammed the city in the early morning hours. 15-foot-high surges pounded and leveled houses, businesses, the railroad yard and everything else on the island.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.1900storm.com\/\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.1900storm.com\/photographs\/aftermath.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"178\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">A panoramic shot of the island showing receeding floodwaters and scattered debris<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As people awoke to the terror, they sped to the\u00a0one iron causeway that would serve as their\u00a0life support, connecting them to the\u00a0much safer mainland. But dread gripped everyone\u00a0when their eyes lit upon the location where the\u00a0bridge <u>used<\/u>\u00a0to be. Winds had snapped it like a match stick and waves dispersed it all over the place. Their one and <u>only<\/u> way of escape was forever\u00a0snatched away. An estimated 8,000 people perished on that single day, making it then, and <u>still<\/u>, our nation&#8217;s worst natural disaster\u00a0in terms of lost lives.\u00a0Because the populace spurned the government&#8217;s warning, nothing\u00a0remained as a means for\u00a0escape. All that awaited the residents was whether or not they would become one of the statistics.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>How tragic, yet how fitting, For the\u00a0Galveston Flood illustrates another, yet even more\u00a0catastrophic <em>&#8220;flood&#8221;<\/em> that is yet coming;\u00a0one that threatens everyone on the\u00a0face of the globe. It too is avoidable, if one heeds the warning.
